Nolan Ryan : A Birth Story

I think it's safe to call this blog post a "personal" post. For oh, so many reasons...

reason #1:
I've never witnessed, let alone photographed a birth before.
reason #2:
This happens to be the birth of my 2nd godson.
reason #3:
Said godson's mama is my soul sister.
reason #4:
I first met her at the 2nd wedding I ever photographed (2008). I first met her husband when we met for their engagement photos (2009). Little did I know I was embarking on a lifelong photographic journey with someone I would come to call a best friend -- going on to photograph their wedding, first pregnancy, countless family photos, second pregnancy, and now Nolan's birth. Needless to say, this family is truly near and dear to my heart.
reason #5:
This was one of the most magical, miraculous, mind-blowing things I've ever experienced.

I arrived to the hospital around 10am on Wednesday, December 11th. He being their 2nd child, we all thought baby Nolan might make a quick entry into the world.
We were wrong.
At precisely 10:43am the NEXT morning, Nolan Ryan took his first breath.

drumroll PLEASE.....

let me just start by saying...

Okay, now that I've got that out of the way, let me tell you a little bit about the photography love-child I've been scheming with the all-so-lovely and ever-so-talented Lindsey Gomes...

Together, we've dreamed up a workshop focused on finding your voice, loving your voice, and screaming from the rooftops with that voice.

What does that look like, you ask?
Let me tell you...

We start with a Fancy Pants Meet & Greet on Friday Night.
No, that doesn't mean sitting around in a circle to share our names and our favorite food.
It means getting dolled up, drinking tasty drinks, eating tasty treats,
and getting to know the other artists you'll be embarking on this journey of self-exploration and fierce inspiration with.
And having a lot (I say a LOT) of fun.

Then on Saturday, after we indulge with coffee, tea & donuts -- we dig in.
Some things we'll cover:

- discovering your voice as an artist (and being confident with that voice)
- finding inspiration
- social media (the pros AND cons)
- workflow walkthrough
- shooting tips, tricks & techniques
- hands on photographic adventure
... just to name a few.

The price tag on this bad boy is $350, and includes:
- friday night drinks & treats
- saturday morning warm beverages and donuts
- saturday afternoon lunch in the park
- saturday evening dinner finale
- not to mention a flood of inspiration, information & exploration.

There will also be a spectacular slumber party option to add onto your workshop ticket (for only an additional $25). On Friday night, Lindsey and I will be sleeping over at the workshop venue (Unwind on Vine in Paso Robles). So don't forget your coziest pajamas.

So don't be a fool.
Seats are limited.
Save your seat NOW. (email:
We can't wait to meet, hang out with, and be inspired with you.

Rosarito, Mexico

Oh, Mexico. What to say about you...

Back in October, Saman and Natalie invited Jenna and I to come photograph their wedding in Rosarito.
Our time there was short, sweet, and full of memories that will bring both Jenna and I into a laughing fit.
From the easiest border crossings ever (I knew the immigrations officer coming back into the US. this is seriously he smallest of worlds), to our encounter with a shopkeeper named Manuel (who showed us Mexican hospitality and dressed us up for the photo you'll see) -- Jenna and I practiced saying "yes" to adventure and took a few photographs along the way...
